Save the Cows! Introduction
The number of times I have given variants on this talk attests to the power of a strong visual. The image on the opening slide turned out to be absolutely unforgettable for a good many people, for good or ill.
This was also the first (I think) of quite a few talks I’ve given in which I introduced new ideas to audiences whose receptivity was not exactly guaranteed. Then as now, I keep my tone light, my language unadorned, and my approach resolutely non-technical. I won’t say this is perfectly or universally effective—is anything?—but I will say it works a good bit better than other approaches I’ve seen.
